The Moldovan prosecutor's office announced yesterday that it had opened a criminal case against the former chief of the general staff of the army of Moldova Igor Gorgan after reports in the media that he probably spied for Russia, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
The Russian investigative site "Insider" in cooperation with the Moldavian media "Small Country" wrote last week that Gorgan may have passed classified information on both Moldova and neighboring Ukraine to Russian intelligence services. He worked from 2013 to 2016 and also from 2019 to 2021 as the Chief of the General Staff of the Moldovan Army.
Gorgan, fired in 2021 by Moldova's pro-European president Maya Sandu as army chief of staff, is a graduate of a Soviet-era military school. Sandu said he would be stripped of his rank of general and his state honors would also be stripped.
