Our Europe must become a Europe accessible to all, in which everyone feels not only a part of it, but also its owner. This was stated by Roberta Mezzola after she was elected for the second time today as the President of the European Parliament. Addressing MEPs at the opening of the tenth European Parliament, she mentioned the gap between people's expectations and what MEPs can do, quoted by BTA.

In response to a question from BTA about bridging this gap, Mezzola recalled how five years ago there were questions about whether there would be a pact on migration and asylum, a law on digital services, a law on digital markets, a law on artificial intelligence, legislation on violence against women and climate package.

„I think this was the biggest proof that this parliament gets results and acts when it is required,” she pointed out, but added that the work is not done and there is a lot of work to be done. Now is the time, the mandate was given to us, the trust was given to us. We must be sure that we will repay the trust of our citizens who voted for us, she pointed out.

In her speech after the election, Roberta Mezzola also emphasized the responsibility “to leave Europe better than we found it”. And we will leave Europe in a better place by creating a new security and defense framework that will ensure people's safety and resist the expansionist dreams of dictators in our neighboring countries, she added.

Roberta Mezzola also talks about Europe's competitiveness, the need for real climate solutions, the strengthening of the social pillar, the implementation of appropriate legislation in the field of migration and asylum, Europe's ability to take advantage of the opportunities of the digital age .

We have learned that we can never take democracy for granted, Roberta Mezzola also pointed out. She paid special attention to the war in Ukraine. Russian military aggression against sovereign Ukraine remains at the top of our agenda, she pointed out.

According to the preliminary program, the new European Parliament is expected to express strong support for Ukraine. On Wednesday morning, the leaders of the political groups will make statements on the need for the EU to continue supporting Ukraine, and in the late afternoon a special resolution will be voted on.
