A policeman was wounded with a knife in Paris, the attacker is dead

A pickpocket from Senegal was shot in the stomach by law enforcement after the attack

A policeman was wounded with a knife in Paris, BTA reported.

The police said that the attack was not a terrorist attack, nor was it related to the Summer Olympic Games, which the French capital is hosting, starting in a few days, reports AFP.

The policeman is seriously injured, but his life is not in danger.

The attacker is a 27-year-old man from Senegal, a regular resident of France, who was not known to the intelligence services but was known to the police as a pickpocket.

He was seriously injured, going into cardiac arrest and dying from his wounds when he was neutralized.

The attack was carried out near the iconic boulevard "Champs-Elysée" in the heart of Paris. The injured police officer was called to a Louis Vuitton boutique to remove the troublemaker.

The Senegalese man disobeyed two policemen and wounded one in the arm with a knife. The other law enforcement officer shot the thief in the stomach.

The incident happened eight days before the opening of the Olympics in Paris.

About 35,000 police and gendarmerie and 18,000 soldiers are stationed in the French capital every day to ensure security during the biggest sporting event of the year, notes AFP.

Yesterday's attack is the latest in a series of unrelated incidents in Paris this week.

A soldier was stabbed at Gare du Nord in the French capital on Monday. The attacker, who committed a murder in 2018, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

On Wednesday, a car crashed into the terrace of a bar in the northeast of the city, killing one person and injuring six. The driver, who according to the prosecutor's office may have acted deliberately, was also placed in a psychiatric hospital. According to the authorities, the man said he "hears voices".
