Israeli authorities are planning to send summonses to nearly 1,000 ultra-Orthodox men between the ages of 18 and 26, DPA reported, citing public television "Can". The television quoted Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant, BTA broadcasts.

The process of sending the call letters will start from Sunday.

For many years, ultra-Orthodox Jews were exempt from military service, but the government failed to extend the law that provided for this exemption. As a result, the Supreme Court ruled last month that these men must be called up.

The Israeli army, which is struggling with a troop shortage because of the war in the Gaza Strip, plans to draft 3,000 ultra-Orthodox men in three stages this year.

Many Israelis consider it unfair that ultra-Orthodox Jews have so far been exempted from military service and participation in dangerous operations.

For their part, many in the ultra-Orthodox community object to military service, which is considered incompatible with their religious way of life, especially because of the joint service of men and women. In recent weeks, thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews have protested in the streets of Israeli cities against mandatory military service.
