Trump: I spoke with Zelensky, I will end the war

Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate an agreement to end the violence, the Republican presidential candidate said

The US presidential candidate from Republican Party Donald Trump said he had a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The American politician described the conversation between the two as "very good" and declared that he would end the war, putting Kiev and Moscow at the negotiating table, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

In a comment on the social network “Trut Social“ Trump indicated that as president he would “bring peace to the world and an end to the war that has cost so many lives”.

„Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate an agreement that ends the violence and paves the way for prosperity,” said Trump.

Zelensky also reported on his conversation with Trump and expressed gratitude for American military aid. But he did not mention anything in his comment on the social network “X“ on efforts to end the 28-month conflict.

Trump previously said he would end the war in Ukraine even before he takes office next January if he wins the Nov. 5 election. He also stated that if he had been president of the United States in February 2022, the war would not have broken out. Although he has so far made no concrete policy proposals, he said last year in an interview with Reuters that Ukraine might have to cede some of its territory to reach a peace deal.

In his comment in “X“ Zelensky said he congratulated Trump on the Republican nomination and condemned the assassination attempt on him last Saturday.

„I wished him strength and complete safety in the future,”, he wrote. “I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral (in the US Congress – ed.) American support for protecting the freedom and independence of our country,”, he added. Zelensky pointed out that Ukraine "will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening its defense capabilities against Russian terror." Russian attacks on our towns and villages continue daily.

Zelensky rejects any talks with Russia to end the conflict while Russian troops remain on Ukrainian territory.

The Ukrainian president proposed a peace plan that was relaunched at an international summit last month to which Russia was not invited. It calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of Ukraine's post-Soviet borders since 1991.

Russian troops occupy about 20% of the territory of Ukraine. Moscow's forces have been making gradual gains in the east of the country along a 1,000km front since capturing the key town of Avdeyevka in February.
