US President calls for party unity

A fast-growing group of Democratic congressmen have called on US President Joe Biden to drop his bid for re-election, even though the president is adamant that is set to return to the campaign trail next week to counter what he calls the “bleak outlook” about the development of the country, presented by the Republican Donald Trump, reported the Associated Press, quoted by BTA.

Biden is currently staying in isolation at his Delaware home after being diagnosed with COVID-19. The president insists he can beat Trump and is resisting attempts by his fellow party members to disqualify him from the candidacy.

Biden himself said that Trump's speech when accepting the nomination from the Republican National Convention represented a “bleak vision of the future”. At the same time, he said he plans to return to the campaign trail and insisted there is a way to defeat Trump despite the concerns of some senior party members.

“Together, as a party and as a country, we can defeat him at the ballot box,”, Biden said. “The stake is high and the choice is clear. "Together we can win," he added.

Earlier, his campaign chairman, Jen Dillion, acknowledged a drop in support for the president, but added that he remains in the race.

White House physician Kevin O'Connor said the American leader still has a dry cough and a hoarse voice, but his condition is improving.

Biden noted his illness while also speaking out against Trump on social media, posting: “I am forced to stay home due to COVID-19, so I had the great misfortune of watching Donald Trump's speech at the Republican convention. What the hell was he talking about?“

At the same time, Vice President Kamala Harris assured major donors to the Democratic campaign that the party would win the election, Reuters reported. “We know which candidate in the election puts the American people first: our President Joe Biden,”, she said.
