Russian MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighters prevented the violation of the state border of Russia by two American B-52 strategic bombers over the Barents Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry reported today, quoted by TASS, quoted by BTA.
„On July 21 of this year, with the help of Russian airspace control means over the Barents Sea, a group air target approaching the state border of Russia was detected. To identify the air target and prevent the violation of the Russian state border, MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighters from the air defense forces on duty were scrambled. The crews of the Russian fighter jets identified the air target as a pair of B-52 strategic bombers of the US Air Force,“ the statement said.
The Russian Defense Ministry specified that “when the Russian fighter jets approached, the US strategic bombers changed course, turned around and moved away from the state border of Russia“.
“The Russian planes returned safely to their airfields, and the violation of the state border of Russia was not allowed“, the statement added.
