China strongly opposes and condemns the killing of the leader of “Hamas“ Ismail Hania, AFP and Reuters reported, citing a statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jiang, quoted by BTA.

According to Beijing, what happened could lead to increased instability in the region.

Hania was killed in an airstrike on his residence in the Iranian capital, the Associated Press recalled, citing statements by Tehran and the Palestinian group "Hamas".

„We are very worried about this incident, we firmly oppose and condemn this murder,” Lin Jiang stressed.

China has been supporting the Palestinian cause for decades, AFP recalls.

Qatar also condemned Haniya's murder, calling it a “heinous crime”. Doha warned that what happened “could throw the region into chaos and compromise the chances of peace”.

The political leadership of “Hamas”, of which Haniya was a part, is located in Qatar. The country is a mediator in the negotiations for a truce in the Gaza Strip, AFP recalls.
