German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock yesterday called on German citizens to leave Lebanon because of the escalation of tensions in the region, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Berbok made his appeal after the leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas" Ismail Haniya was killed in Tehran.
"I call once again on all German citizens to leave Lebanon while they still can," said Berbock in a statement published by the German Foreign Ministry on the social network "X".
In this tense situation "any decision can calm the situation or add fuel to the fire. I call on everyone, especially Iran, to exercise restraint and work for de-escalation for the sake of the people of the region," the foreign minister called.
Iran and "Hamas" blamed Israel for Haniya's murder and threatened revenge. The Lebanese Shia movement "Hezbollah" stated that today its leader Hassan Nasrallah will give a speech.
"It is of key importance that the conflict in the region does not grow,", Analena Berbok also said.
The German government, in cooperation with its partners and through diplomatic channels, is doing everything possible to prevent escalation and regional conflict, the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The German ministry clarifies that Berbock is in close contact with Germany's partners in the European Union and with representatives from the Middle East region.
