Berbock: American missiles in Germany will ensure reliable deterrence of Russian aggression

The foreign minister defended the decision to deploy them in the country

German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock defended the decision to deploy American missiles with large reach in the country, reported DPA, quoted by BTA.

“Doing foreign policy today means recognizing the following: the principle of hope will not protect us from Putin's Russia”, writes Berbok in a commentary for the Sunday issue of the magazine “Bild am Sonntag”.

“What keeps us safe is the investment in our own security and strength – in the EU, in NATO and in Germany. And this includes the decision to deploy American weapons systems with a long range”, adds the German minister.

According to her, the weapons in question will provide “reliable deterrence” of Russian aggression.

In addition, Berbok accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of reacting to every peace initiative with escalation and that all he wants is “Ukraine to obey him”.

On the sidelines of the recent NATO summit in Washington, it was announced that in 2026, the deployment of American Tomahawk cruise missiles will begin in Germany. with a range that can reach deep into Russia, as well as SM-6 air defense missiles and newly developed hypersonic weapons.

Some German politicians were surprised by the decision, DPA notes. Several parties, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party of Germany, criticized the plan and called for it to be tabled in parliament.
