A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale was registered yesterday off the Greek island of Crete, the Greek Institute of Geodynamics reported, quoted by Sky TV, quoted by BTA.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea south of Crete, 15 km northeast of the small island of Gavdos. The depth of the outbreak is estimated at 11.6 km.
The tremor was strongly felt in the areas of Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion.
There were no reports of injured people or serious damage. The mayor of Gavdos, Michalis Saris, told ANA-MPA that some residents were scared, but the damage was only toppled household utensils. The mayor of Sfakia, Janis Zervos, reported cracks in the municipality building.
