Macron and Scholz: Our support for Ukraine will continue, as long as it should

The French President and the German Prime Minister spoke in Evian, near the Swiss border

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed the support for Ukraine and stated that it will last as long as necessary. They also called for the greatest possible responsibility on the part of everyone to achieve peace in the Middle East, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.

During a conversation on the sidelines of the annual Franco-German meeting in Evian near the Swiss border, the two leaders condemned in the strongest possible terms the Russian strike on Poltava that killed at least 55 people on Tuesday.

"They expressed their full support for the Ukrainian people and reaffirmed their determination to support Ukraine as long and as intensively as necessary to stop Russia's war,”, the French presidency said.

Regarding the Middle East, the two leaders reaffirmed the “need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza” and called on all parties to “show maximum responsibility to allow peace and stability to return to the region”.

In connection with the formation of the new European Commission, the president and the chancellor also discussed ways to “stimulate competitiveness and growth in the EU” according to the program of economic sovereignty and prosperity defined by the two countries in Meseberg, near Berlin, in May.

Macron and Scholz met today in Evian at a time when both are experiencing "turbulent domestic political times". In key elections in recent months in their countries, their parties performed unconvincingly, France Press recalls.
