France has "killed democracy" with its verdict against far-right leader Marine Le Pen, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.
Le Pen was banned from running in the 2027 presidential election after she was convicted on Monday of misusing EU funds.
Zakharova expressed hope that Le Pen's appeal would be successful.
The leader of the far-right in France is a political opponent of President Emmanuel Macron, whom Moscow has criticized for his support for Ukraine and for his position in favor of sending European peacekeeping forces to the country after a possible peace agreement between Kiev and Moscow, Reuters recalls.
At the same time, Zakharova said that the use of military force against Iran would be "unlawful and unacceptable". She made the comments in response to US President Donald Trump's threats to bomb Iran if Tehran does not reach an agreement with Washington over its nuclear program.
"Bombing nuclear infrastructure would have catastrophic consequences for the entire world," Zakharova said, adding that Iran has the right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
