Romania appoints interim prime minister

Catalin Predoiu takes over

Catalin Predoiu has been appointed interim prime minister of Romania. Until now, he was the country's interior minister.

The reshuffle took place after interim President Ilie Bolognese accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Monday and signed a decree appointing Predoiu. He will fulfill his duties until the formation of a new government, the presidential administration informed.

Predoiu is from the National Liberal Party. He was born on August 27, 1968 in Buzau. In 1991, he graduated from the University of Bucharest, where he taught commercial law from 1994 to 2005. He has held the post of Minister of Justice several times – in 2008 – 2012, 2019 – 2020 and 2021 – 2023. In two short periods - 6 – February 9, 2012 and 12 – June 15, 2023, he served as Prime Minister of Romania. Since June 15, 2023, he has been Minister of Interior.
