French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confidence today in trade talks between the EU and the US after his American counterpart Donald Trump announced an extension until July 9 of the suspension of tariffs imposed on European goods, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.

The French leader made this statement to the media in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.

"Discussions are progressing well, there was a good exchange of views between President Trump and (EC) President von der Leyen and I hope that we can continue on this path, which should lead us back to the lowest possible tariffs," he added.

"We believe that trade imbalances, when they exist, cannot be resolved through tariffs," Macron noted.

In Friday Donald Trump said he was "not looking for a deal" with the European Union and threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on imports from June 1. The European Commission, which negotiates trade agreements on behalf of the EU, reacted immediately, demanding respect from Washington.

EC President Ursula von der Leyen announced yesterday that she had a "good conversation" with Donald Trump, who subsequently confirmed the suspension of import tariffs until July 9.

Vietnam is also in the sights of the Trump administration, which is threatening to impose a 46 percent tax on Vietnamese exports to the US market if an agreement is not reached in the next few weeks.
