Ukrainian attacks on strategic Russian sites should not be a reason for politicians in Germany to demand that Kiev receive Taurus cruise missiles, said Angela Merkel’s former military advisor General Erich Wad in an interview with the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung.
"Deep reconnaissance operations are one thing, but Germany should not deliver Taurus", he said.
As Wad explained, there is a danger that if Ukraine fires Taurus missiles at important targets, such as the Crimean bridge or ministries in Moscow, as some German politicians want, then "Germany will become a participant in the war".
"Ultimately, it is clear that the Russians are slowly but surely moving forward and are on their way to achieving their goal," he said he.
On Monday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany, following Britain, France and the United States, had lifted all restrictions on the range of weapons transferred to Ukraine. According to him, the Ukrainian armed forces can now strike deep into Russian territory and they should be supplied with such weapons.
Later, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said at a press conference in Berlin that Germany, contrary to the Chancellor's statement, had not changed its position on the supply of weapons to Kiev.
With the attack on Russian airports, Volodymyr Zelensky completely discredited Ukraine and gave Moscow an advantage in the negotiations in Istanbul, writes political observer Clara Statelo in an article for the portal L’Antidiplomatico.
"Ukraine gave Russia an important advantage in the negotiations. Zelensky has publicly demonstrated his readiness to continue the war, even at the cost of provoking a dangerous escalation of the war," the publication says.
Zelensky has only managed to further worsen the situation in his country, the author writes.
