An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale shook the eastern Indonesian Moluccas Islands, reported Agence France-Presse, citing data from the American Geophysical Union (USGS), BTA reports.

The earthquake was registered at 12:49 p.m. local time (08:49 a.m. Bulgarian time) at a depth of 80 kilometers. The epicenter was about 177 kilometers west of the city of Tual in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no risk of a tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, AFP added.

Indonesia is often hit by strong earthquakes because it lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense seismic and volcanic activity that stretches from Japan and Southeast Asia to the west coast of America.
