Israel will allow gradual and controlled entry of goods into the famine-stricken Gaza Strip through local traders. This was announced today by the Israeli military agency for the Coordination of Government Action in the Territories (COGAT), which is subordinate to the Ministry of Defense and coordinates humanitarian aid. The news was disseminated by the DPA and Agence France-Presse agencies, BTA reports.
“A mechanism has been approved to gradually resume the flow of goods through the private sector into the Gaza Strip in a controlled manner“, the official COGAT statement said.
The aim of the new approach is to increase the volume of aid entering the enclave, while reducing dependence on humanitarian aid supplies provided by the UN and other international organizations.
Among the goods approved for import are basic food products, including baby food, fruits, vegetables and hygiene materials.
Payments for the goods will be made via bank transfers, with each transaction being carried out according to the established control and supervision mechanism, the Israeli agency TPS specified.
