Boxing star Conor McGregor prepares for the presidential election in Ireland VIDEO

Former world champion urged his supporters to nominate him for the post

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor has urged his supporters to include him on the ballot for the presidential election in Ireland in October.

McGregor posted a video message on Instagram recorded in front of the government building in Dublin.

„If you want to see my name on the presidential ballot, I urge you to contact your local councilors today and ask them to nominate me“, McGregor said.

Elon Musk shared McGregor's post on the social network X and accompanied it with Irish flags.

McGregor announced his plans to run for president back in March.

Last week, he said he had already “secured“ his participation in the election, The Irish Times notes. However, McGregor's name does not appear on any list of candidates who have contacted local councils in an attempt to gain their support.

To be included on the ballot, McGregor needs the support of 20 members of parliament or four local or county councils.

The 37-year-old McGregor will fight for the last time in the summer of 2021 against American Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

The election will be held on October 24, with candidates nominating by September 24. The President is elected for a seven-year term and can serve no more than two terms. The office of President of Ireland is largely ceremonial, but his powers include appointing the Prime Minister, ministers, and judges, and signing bills into law.
