China and EU have agreed to start talks on planned tax on Chinese-made electric cars, which are imported to the European market., BNR reported.
The news was confirmed by official representatives of both countries.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said he had been informed by Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis that specific talks on tariffs with China would take place. The confirmation comes after the country's Commerce Ministry said Minister Wang Wentao and Dombrovskis had agreed to begin consultations on the EU's investigation into state subsidies of Chinese electric cars.
The European Commission plans to raise customs duties on Chinese electric cars imported into the EU to 38.1 percent. They are due to take effect from early July, but can be lifted retroactively if both sides agree.
The current tariffs for car manufacturers outside the EU borders are 10 percent, DPA specifies.
