Canada to retaliate against US tariffs - 1

Canada intends to "cause enormous pain" to the US by imposing tariffs on US-made goods in response to President-elect Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs on Canadian goods. This was stated by Canadian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson.

„If the US decides to impose tariffs, then Canada will have to respond, we are developing a list of retaliatory measures. "This list will certainly be intended to inflict great pain on the United States in order to put pressure on President-elect Trump to lift the tariffs," he said on CTV.

At the same time, Wilkinson noted that he does not consider the introduction of retaliatory tariffs inevitable. "I think there are ways to have a conversation with the Trump administration, US senators and American businesses about how we can help them with the agenda that the president-elect laid out during his campaign, which includes reducing dependence on China on issues such as key mineral resources," the minister noted.

According to The Globe and Mail, Canadian authorities plan to impose tariffs on orange juice imported from the United States, ceramic products, including toilets and sinks, as well as steel products. According to sources in the publication, the list of goods to respond to Trump's threats is still being finalized. The list could also include flowers and some glass and plastic products, a Canadian government source told the newspaper.

The United States, Mexico and Canada are bound by a trilateral agreement that includes the creation of a free trade area between these countries. However, on November 25, 2024, Trump announced that on his first day as president he would impose a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico in connection with illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
