"Current laws and regulations in the Republic of South Africa do not allow the supply of weapons and ammunition to countries that could transport them to areas where hostilities are taking place", said the official representative of the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs Crispin Pirie at a briefing, commenting on the information on the ban on the supply of artillery shells from South Africa at the request of Poland.
„Existing law in South Africa prohibits the supply of munitions to countries that could divert them to areas of military conflict. Relevant monitoring is carried out by South Africa's state-owned National Conventional Arms Control Committee. He is the one who makes the final decision on the export of any batch of weapons, including shells," Piri added.
Earlier, the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita reported that the South African government had banned the delivery of 50,000 155mm artillery shells to Poland. The order was received in 2022 by the South African company Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM), which is owned by Germany's Rheinmetall.
