China hits back at Canada in EV war - 1

Chinese authorities will take action in response to Canada's increased tariffs on electric vehicles , steel and aluminum products imported from China, China's Ministry of Commerce announced.

„For a certain period of time, the Canadian side has repeatedly ignored objective facts and disregarded international trade and economic rules. China will take all necessary measures to reliably protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises”, the statement said.

It emphasizes that Beijing insists that Ottawa “approach bilateral trade and economic cooperation issues rationally and objectively”, abide by World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and “not move on the wrong way”. . The Commerce Department's commentary notes that Canada, “despite protests and admonitions”, has taken similar steps to exert unilateral pressure on China “following individual countries”.

The Commerce Department recalled that China has already filed a claim at the WTO in response to the Canadian government's protectionist actions. “The methods Canada is using violate the principles of a market economy and fair competition. They are seriously undermining the normal commercial and economic cooperation between the companies of the two countries”, the announcement states.

Indicates the serious risks facing global supply chains due to such measures. In addition, Ottawa's approach would "seriously affect trade and economic relations between China and Canada". “The PRC is categorically opposed”, the ministry concludes.

On October 1st, Canada introduced increased tariffs on electric vehicles (the rate is 100%), and from October 15th it will introduce higher tariffs on aluminum and steel products (25%) from China. Beijing is investigating whether Ottawa discriminated against suppliers of these goods imported from China.
