Representatives of the Romanian company Nuclearelectrica and a consortium of American, Canadian and Italian companies signed a contract for the construction of the third and fourth units of the nuclear power plant in Chernavoda (Konstanza County) on the sidelines of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-29) in Baku. This was announced by the Romanian Ministry of Energy.
„This is the most important project in the Romanian energy sector in recent decades”, said Energy Minister Sebastian Burduia. “Together with the largest international partners, we will implement it by 2031-2032.“
„The two new reactors will mean an additional installed capacity of more than 1400 MW in Cerna Voda, increasing Romania's annual energy production by more than 11 million MWh for at least 30 years, more than 19 thousand. paid jobs and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by at least 10 million tons per year“, the minister noted.
The third and fourth units of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant will provide the necessary amount of energy for the annual consumption of 7 million households today, the Romanian Ministry of Energy said in a statement. After the completion of the project, in 7-8 years, Romania will provide more than 30% of its energy needs from nuclear energy.
