The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute is organizing a two-day seminar to be held on September 25 and 26 in Aheloy. The theme is "Strengths. Challenges to the scientific and logistical cooperation of the Balkan countries in the polar regions".
The chairman of the institute, Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, emphasized to BNR that this is the first working meeting of its kind organized between the Balkan countries. Bulgaria is the only country in the region that has had a polar base for more than 30 years, and together with the EU it is developing many initiatives for the future development of the polar regions and above all of Antarctica, he pointed out, quoted by the BNR.
In the show "Above all" Prof. Pimpirev pointed out that the meeting will emphasize the importance of concentrating Europe's efforts in the study of the polar regions. Participation has been confirmed by researchers from Romania, Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Cyprus, Spain.
"The Balkan countries should get involved more seriously in the study of the polar regions, because this is a task before all of humanity. Climate change is here," he is emphatic.
This year, with the 33rd expedition of the Bulgarian ship, there will also be two Greek scientists, Prof. Pimpirev announced, adding that they will work in Antarctica for the first time.
In his words, preparations for the expedition are already in the final stage. The ship is expected to set sail at the beginning of November from the port of Varna and be at our polar base around Christmas, Prof. Pimpirev announced.
