Israel Strikes Syrian City of Latakia, Hits Peacekeeper Tower in Lebanon - 1

Israeli Strike Targets Syrian Mediterranean port city of Latakia, early today led to fires, reported the Syrian agency SANA, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

Firefighters are working to put out the fires, reports the agency.

Syrian state television reported that the country's air defenses covered the attack on Israeli targets over Latakia.

Israel has been striking Iran-linked targets in Syria for years, but has increased the number of such strikes since October 7 last year, when the militant group "Hamas" carried out an attack on Israeli territory, according to Reuters.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that an Israeli tank opened fire on one of their observation towers in southern Lebanon today, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

"This morning, peacekeepers at a position near Kafr Qila observed a tank "Merkava" of the IDF [Israel Defense Forces], who opened fire on their observation tower. "Two cameras were destroyed and the tower was damaged," UNIFIL said in a statement. "Once again we are witnessing direct and apparently deliberate shelling of a UNIFIL position," the statement added.

UNIFIL called on the Israeli military and all actors to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and "to always respect the integrity of UN facilities".

UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon have come under fire several times in recent days and at least four of their personnel have been wounded. Israeli tanks also smashed the main gate of a UN base in southern Lebanon on Sunday.

Israel accuses the Iranian-backed military group Hezbollah of using the areas around UNIFIL bases for its own purposes.

UNIFIL has been monitoring the border region between Israel and Lebanon since 1978. More than 10,000 military personnel from over 50 countries are participating in the mission.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin talks with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Galant. The two discussed Israel's operations in Lebanon and the humanitarian situation in Gaza following the letter from Washington to Israel, sent earlier this week, urging an improvement in the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave, Reuters reported, citing BTA.

"The minister encouraged the government of Israel to continue taking steps to address the dire humanitarian situation, noting Israel's recent actions to increase the amount of humanitarian aid entering Gaza,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
