The Scottish “Sphinx“ - a snow patch left over from the Ice Age on the third highest mountain in the United Kingdom is about to disappear, NOVA reported.
Permafrost is famous for never melting, except on three extremely rare occasions in the 20th century. However, in 2024, for the fourth year in a row, the ice is decreasing more and more, scientists warn.
„The Sphinx” is located in the Cairngorms National Park. It is the closest thing to a glacier that can be seen on the Island, claims expert Ian Cameron. According to him, years ago the snow patch was 34 and even 50 meters longer, but under the influence of the increasingly warming climate, the ice is disappearing.
„The Sphinx“ is a remnant of the last ice age and has been carefully observed since the 1800s.
