The Italian masters from MV Agusta have literally blown up the notions of motorcycle engineering, presenting an engine that looks as if it came from the future. The world of two wheels now has its own new technological benchmark - the first of its kind V5 engine, which leaves conventional schemes in history and sets frighteningly high standards for power and compactness.
This mechanical jewel, named Cinque Cilindri, is not just another variation on familiar ideas. Instead of copying the in-line configurations of Audi or the exotic VR5 of Volkswagen, the engineers from Varese have opted for a radical trapezoidal architecture. The construction is dizzying: two cylinders are located at the top, and the other three are arranged below them. This atypical geometry is not only for visual enjoyment, but is the key to the perfect balance between size and performance.
At the heart of this monster beat two crankshafts - the front one is responsible for the three lower cylinders, while the rear one transmits the energy from the upper two. The result is engineering magic: the engine is narrower than a standard four-cylinder unit and shorter than the mass-produced V4 solution. Even more incredible is that this entire facility weighs a modest 60 kilograms, which makes it a real “thing” in the heavyweight category of superbikes.
When we talk about numbers, the Cinque Cilindri is downright blood-curdling. The engine is designed to rev to a mind-boggling 16,000 rpm, with displacement ranging from 850 to 1,150 cc. In its most refined version, the Italian machine generates a brutal 240 horsepower and 135 Nm of torque. These figures directly challenge the previous masters of the track such as the Ducati Panigale V4 R, promising dominance backed by a unique sound and character.
The magic of MV Agusta also lies in the way this power is transferred to the asphalt. Thanks to a specific ignition sequence, the Italians have achieved linear and predictable torque without relying on cumbersome variable valve timing systems. This ensures that the motorcycle will be both furious on the straights and precise as a scalpel in the corners, giving the rider complete confidence in extreme riding.
Although the Cinque Cilindri made its debut as a concept at the EICMA exhibition, the company is adamant – this is not just a showcase exhibit. The ambition is to have this five-cylinder beast enter series production as soon as possible. The flexibility of the platform is impressive, as it is planned to power everything – from track bikes and aggressive naked models to high-tech touring motorcycles.
