LG Display begins mass production of dual-layer OLED displays for laptops - 1

LG Display announced the start of mass production of energy-efficient dual-layer 13-inch tandem OLED panels for laptops. This technology first debuted in 2019. Tandem OLED panels combine two layers of organic LEDs. Thanks to this, screens based on them have increased resistance to fading, better efficiency and higher brightness compared to conventional displays based on single-layer OLED panels.

Tandem OLED technology was originally used to produce automotive computer screens, which are subject to particularly high quality standards to dissipate heat and ensure reliable operation over longer periods of time.

This is the first time Tandem OLED display technology will be used for laptops. LG says Tandem OLED can provide twice the lifespan and triple the brightness of screens compared to conventional single-layer OLED panels. At the same time, Tandem OLED has 40% lower energy consumption compared to double-layer.

Technology improvements allow the company to make the 13-inch tandem OLED panels 40% thinner and 28% lighter than conventional OLED screens. In addition to this, LG Display has integrated touch sensors in the Tandem OLED to improve the accuracy and sensitivity of touch control.

The company's Tandem OLED displays support WQXGA+ (2880 x 1800 pixels) resolution and have 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. Thanks to OLED's self-emissive pixel characteristics and infinite contrast ratio, Tandem OLED is also certified by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) as DisplayHDR True Black 500 compatible, indicating its ability to produce so-called deep black.
