The US Commerce Department plans to propose a ban on the sale or import of "smart" vehicles that use certain Chinese or Russian technologies. The possible solution is dictated by national security considerations. This is reported by CNN .
A US government investigation that began in February found a number of national security risks from embedded software and hardware from China and Russia in US vehicles. This software enables remote control by hacking and harvesting drivers' personal data, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said.
„In extreme situations, a foreign adversary could shut down or take control of all vehicles equipped with their technology operating in the United States at the same time, causing crashes (or) blocking roads,” she said.
However, the rule will not apply to cars already on US roads that have Chinese software installed, a senior administration official told CNN.
According to the Commerce Department, the software ban will go into effect for vehicles from “model year” 2027, while the hardware ban will go into effect for the “model year 2030”.
The Commerce Department's proposed rule applies to “connected vehicles” – virtually any modern car, bus or truck that uses network connections for roadside assistance, satellite communication or a range of other functions.
After a 30-day public comment period, the department aims to issue a final regulation before the end of the Biden administration's term, a senior administration official said.
