US President Joe Biden's administration last week approved the transfer of billions of dollars worth of aerial bombs and fighter jets to Israel, despite concerns about an expected military offensive against the southern Gaza city of Rafah, The Washington Post reports.
Pentagon and US State Department officials have told WP that Israel will receive more than 1,800 MK84 bombs and 500 MK82 bombs, as well as 25 F-35A fighter jets and their engines.
These arms deliveries were approved by the US Congress several years ago, but so far the US administration has not given official consent to their implementation, WP's sources specify.
The American edition notes that the US military practically does not use aerial bombs that are planned to be handed over to Israel, due to the risk of injuring a large number of civilians.
The decision to supply Israel with new weapons comes amid concerns and criticism from the US over the upcoming IDF ground operation in the town of Rafah. The Biden administration fears that this will result in significant civilian casualties.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US, Charles Brown, said a day ago that the US wants to get more information about Israel's plans for the ground operation.
The US State Department believes that a full-scale military operation in the city of Rafah will further isolate Israel.
