US postpones new tariffs on Canada for at least 30 days, Trump also considered Mexico yesterday  - 1

The US will suspend the imposition of new tariffs on Canada for at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced after a phone call with US President Donald Trump, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.

„The introduction of the proposed tariffs will be postponed for at least 30 days while we work together," said the Canadian prime minister, quoted by Reuters.

„Canada is making new commitments. We will appoint an official responsible for the fentanyl problem, we will add Mexican cartels to the list of terrorist organizations [...] and we will create a joint unit with the United States to combat organized crime, fentanyl trafficking and money laundering,“ Trudeau said in a statement on the social network “Ex“.

He added that in his conversation with Trump he had promised additional cooperation in the field of border security. The decision comes after a similar postponement was announced yesterday regarding Mexico, according to Reuters.

For his part, Trump said that his phone call with Trudeau went “very well“, CNN reported.

The European Union wants a constructive dialogue with the United States, but is ready to respond firmly if it becomes the subject of “unfair“ attitude of the new administration of US President Donald Trump, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen yesterday after a meeting with leaders from the bloc, Reuters reported.

„We discussed our transatlantic partnership. This remains our most important partnership [...] we discussed ways to strengthen our pragmatic cooperation with the United States“, the EC President said at a press conference.

„There are new challenges and new uncertainties [...] and, if we become the subject of unfair and arbitrary decisions, the EU will respond firmly“, summarized von der Leyen.

Europe is strong enough to defend its interests in trade negotiations with the United States, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said yesterday after a meeting with European Union leaders, Reuters reported.

„The EU is strong. We have all the capabilities to ensure that we can take care of our interests,” Scholz said.

“And that is also a message to the United States, which is also very closely linked to us,” the chancellor added.

He also praised Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for having secured a postponement of the tariffs that US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose on Mexico.

“The Mexican president is a clever politician,” Scholz said, adding: “She reacted very skillfully.”

Preserving Denmark’s territorial integrity is essential for all EU member states, European Council President Antonio Costa said after a meeting with European leaders yesterday, as quoted by Reuters.

New US President Donald Trump has said he would like to make Greenland, which is autonomous territory of Denmark, part of the US, not ruling out the use of economic and military coercion to convince Copenhagen to meet its demands.
