The F-35A Lightning II fighter jet has entered serial production, US Deputy Defense Secretary William Laplante announced, calling it a "major achievement" for the aircraft type program, Warrior Maven conveys.
William Laplante explains that the formal transition to full-scale production requires robust process control, satisfactory performance and reliability, and the establishment of sufficient support systems, as indicated by the Pentagon.
The F-35 production announcement comes just a day after the US Air Force decided to cut purchases until 2025. The Pentagon originally planned to approve the start of F-35 mass production four years earlier.
Development of the F-35 began in 2002, and the fighter made its first flight in 2006, which is a modification of the 35B.
Production of the fighter originally began in 2004, meaning it took two decades for mass production to begin.
On March 28, it became known that the air base in Siauliai, Lithuania is planned to be prepared to receive fifth generation F-35 fighters by the end of 2025. The NATO fighters are based at the air base "Siauliai" since 2004 on a rotating basis.
