German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said talks with Chinese officials about the war in Ukraine during his recent trip gave "a very important boost" of diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Scholz emphasized that he agreed with the Chinese leadership on the need to hold a peace conference in Switzerland to discuss the war.
Diplomatic efforts are "something that is indispensable in this difficult process, and I am grateful that Germany, and myself, have also been able to contribute,", Scholz said.
Switzerland plans to organize a peace summit on June 15 and 16 that will include around 100 countries, including Ukraine. Russia is not expected to take part, but China, Brazil and the Republic of South Africa could join.
During his visit to Beijing earlier this week, Scholz agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping to coordinate "intensely and positively" the upcoming summit as well as possible future peace conferences.
