Nearly 3,000 people on May 5 danced for a few minutes one of the traditional Cuban versions of salsa - rueda de casino - on the Malecón embankment in front of the Havana Hotel Nacional. This was reported by the agency Prensa Latina.
The organizers invited representatives of the Guinness Book of Records to record the number of people dancing salsa at the same time and confirm that the event took place without violations. A peculiarity of rueda de casino is that at the beginning of the dance all its participants line up in a circle - this figure gives the name of the style (Spanish rueda - wheel, circle). Students from 142 dance schools participated in the event.
According to the organizer Luis Lamo Castillo, the importance of this project is to support the identity of Cuban culture, and Rueda de Casino combines will, solidarity, discipline, a sense of belonging, as well as joy and optimism.
Until now, the largest number of salsa dancers gathered in November 2022 in Venezuela: a total of 2,040 people performed the dance in Caracas. They broke the previous record set in 2019 on the Spanish island of Tenerife - 1,291 dancers.
