A two-minute siren sounded throughout Israel in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. At exactly 10:00 a.m. local time, transport stopped across the country, people stopped work and bowed their heads in remembrance and mourning.
The sound of the sirens that sound on this day is different from the air raid signals that can be heard regularly in different parts of the country for more than six months due to the ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip and on the border with Lebanon . Authorities warned residents that in the event of real danger, the siren should sound in rising and falling tones instead of a continuous beep, warning them to seek shelter immediately.
Day of Commemoration of the Catastrophe and Heroism of the Jewish People in World War II is a national day of mourning established in Israel to commemorate the Jews exterminated by the Nazis and dedicated to the dates of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (April 19 - May 16, 1943). It falls on the 27th day of the month of Nisan (public holidays and memorial dates in Israel are celebrated according to the traditional lunisolar Jewish calendar). This year it fell from the evening of May 5 to the evening of April 6.
Commemorative events began on the evening of May 5 with a state memorial ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum and Research Complex in Jerusalem. That evening, all entertainment venues, bars, restaurants and shops were closed throughout the country until the morning. During the day, entertainment programs are not broadcast in Israel.
