The Leaders on the extreme right in Italy and France, Giorgia Meloni and Marine Le Pen should strengthen cooperation with each other after the European Parliament elections next month, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said, quoted by Reuters and BTA.
Asked during an interview for the French magazine “Poin“ whether after the elections his party FIDES still plans to join the group "European Conservatives and Reformists" in the European Parliament, led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Orbán replied: “Yes, it is still on the agenda”.
He added that now “everything will be rewritten”, after the rival group “Identity and Democracy” of Le Pen expelled from its ranks the PP “Alternative for Germany”, which, according to Orbán, is the main obstacle to cooperation between the two groups in the EP.
In the same interview Orbán said his country is still debating whether to support outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's bid to become NATO's next secretary general, adding that the contender has in the past expressed “ problematic“ opinions.
„On the one hand, he said that Hungary should leave the European Union, and on the other hand, that we should be brought to our knees. This is not the best way to win our support”, Orban stated.
