Twenty people were injured when nine carriages of a passenger train derailed in the Komi Republic, local authorities said. quoted by France Press and BTA.

There were 215 passengers on board the train, traveling from Vorkuta, a city across the Arctic Circle, to the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in the south of the country, according to the latest figures. Nine cars of the 14-car train derailed near the town of Itna in the Komi Republic, a sparsely populated area with a harsh climate.

The news about the number of injured and passengers on the train was reported in Telegram by the head of the Republic of Komi, Vladimir Uyba.

For now, the reasons for the accident are not being announced.

Earlier TASS reported about 70 injured in the derailment.

Transport accidents are not uncommon in Russia, especially in the remote and isolated regions of this vast country, which has one of the most extensive railway networks in the world, notes AFP.

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, there have been several cases of sabotage of railways in Russia, which the authorities have blamed on Ukrainian agents or supporters of Kiev, since railways are one of the logistical elements of the Russian military.

Several people were also sentenced to heavy penalties for damaging railway-related electrical infrastructure.
