The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, announced that the expected meeting of the European foreign ministers in Budapest, within the framework of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, will not take place until the end of August, writes BTA.
At a press conference after today's final meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels before the summer break, he explained that the vast majority of EU countries had expressed criticism of Hungary's policies after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made uncoordinated trips to Moscow and Beijing related to Ukraine. The meeting scheduled for Budapest will take place in Brussels after the vacation, Borel explained.
Opinions are strongly divided, I tried to bring them together, but it didn't work and the decision is mine, he said. There is no question of a boycott - the meeting will take place and Hungary will be represented. This is a symbolic measure, not a sentence, Borrell pointed out.
The EU only supports Ukraine's peace plan. Only (Russian President Vladimir) Putin wants war. No one wants peace more than Ukrainians, he concluded. I am sure that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants progress in the peace talks and wants the participation of the Russian side. We must continue diplomatic efforts, but not on Putin's terms, the high representative said.
It is a shame that we still cannot reach an agreement on the allocation of funds for the military aid to Ukraine, I do not know how we can find a solution, he added regarding Hungary's resistance to securing the funds. It is about funds for the EU countries, which anyway send aid to Ukraine, explained Borel.
