Oil spill could cause ecological disaster in Red Sea - 1

The Greek tanker, the target of the attack by the Houthi rebels, is trying to prevent the leakage of about one million barrels of oil into the Red Sea, the BBC reports, as quoted by News.bg.

MV Sounion was stranded off the coast of Yemen after being struck on August 21 by the Yemeni rebel group.

On August 28, it was confirmed that there was no oil spill in the area of the tanker. Earlier, the Pentagon reported that the vessel was on fire and leaking oil. In response to this claim, the European Mission stated that it was not within their competence to comment on the statements of other institutions.

Private companies operating under the auspices of the military forces of the European Union (EU) will try to prevent an ecological catastrophe in the region.

US Central Command announced late Tuesday that the stricken tanker "poses a serious threat of environmental disaster" and condemned the Houthis' actions as "reckless terrorist acts". The statement emphasized that the rescue operation was "in progress", although it was not clear whether rescue vessels had reached the tanker.

On August 28, the EU reported that several fires were still burning on the main deck of the tanker, but there were no visible signs of an oil spill.

We recall that the Houthis have carried out attacks on several ships in the Red Sea over the past 10 months, with their campaign, according to the Iran-backed group, part of a wider war by "Hamas" in Gaza.

These attacks forced many commercial carriers to reroute their ships and raised fears that the conflict between Israel and "Hamas" could spread and destabilize the Middle East.

Two shells hit a Panamanian-flagged tanker off the coast of Yemen. According to data from the British Maritime Merchant Operations Organization (UKMTO), the incident occurred about 70 nautical miles northwest of the port of Saleif.

A third explosion occurred in the immediate vicinity of the ship, but there were no reports of casualties on board.

Additionally, British maritime security firm Ambrey reported that a drone had attacked a merchant vessel about 50 nautical miles west of Hodeidah in Yemen. There are no reports of casualties or damage and the ship continues on its route.
