Josep Borrell: We have avoided the worst-case scenario between Israel and Lebanon - 1

The High Representative of EU foreign policy and security chief Josep Borrell expressed satisfaction that the worst-case scenario in the tension between Israel and Lebanon, which could have escalated into open war, had been avoided. At the same time, he stressed that the international community must commit to achieving lasting and comprehensive peace in the region, calling for an immediate end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, quoted by News.bg.

Borrell described what was happening as a "terrible tragedy" for Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages held by "Hamas". According to him, this conflict not only threatens regional stability, but also highlights the need for a peaceful future for the Palestinians, which includes their own state and freedom.

The EU's top diplomat also strongly condemned the Israeli attack on a UN-run school in Gaza, saying it was a violation of basic principles of international law.

Since October 8, the Lebanese group "Hezbollah" began shelling Israel, with the two sides continuing to exchange fire, displacing tens of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border.

Israeli officials have said they prefer a peaceful solution that would remove Iran-backed "Hezbollah" from the border. For its part, "Hezbollah" said it would continue military action as long as the conflict in Gaza continues.
