The Chancellor, currently in New York for the UN General Assembly, called for a dialogue between citizens on vital topics such as pensions, action on climate change, migration and the war in Ukraine, which have sparked heated debates in recent election campaigns in Germany.
"I hope we continue to talk to each other, not just about each other or past each other,” he said.
He said the vast majority of the population knows that Germany urgently needs workers from abroad in many sectors, but also expects the authorities to be able to choose who can come to the country.
Similarly, Scholz argues, most German citizens support Ukraine while seeking diplomatic avenues for peace.
