Biden approves $567 million in military aid to Taiwan - 1

US President Joe Biden yesterday approved $567 million in military aid million dollars for Taiwan, Reuters reported, citing a White House statement cited by BTA.

This is another move by Washington to strengthen the defense capabilities of the island, which is facing heightened tensions with China, the agency added.

The United States remains Taiwan's most influential international backer and arms supplier, despite having no formal diplomatic relations, according to Reuters. China has repeatedly called on the United States to stop arms sales to Taiwan, which it considers its territory.

The White House statement said Biden has authorized Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to oversee the Department of Defense's spending on military equipment and services, as well as military education and training. No further details have been revealed, Reuters clarifies.

In April this year, Biden signed a law on military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, the agency recalls.
