Israel on alert: How will it respond to an Iranian missile attack? - 1

Israel threatened to retaliate to a missile attack by Iran on Tuesday, in which more than 180 ballistic missiles were fired, many of which were intercepted by Israeli air defense systems. Here are some of the possible ways in which Israel, supported by the US, could react to this attack, presented by Reuters, quoted by News.bg.

Attack on Iranian military facilities

Analysts say Israel's most likely response will be to strike Iranian military facilities, particularly those that produce ballistic missiles similar to those used in Tuesday's attack. Israel could also destroy Iranian air defense systems and missile launch facilities. This would be the closest in kind response to the Iranian attack.

Attack on Iran's nuclear facilities

Another possible option is to strike Iran's nuclear facilities in order to slow down Tehran's ability to produce nuclear weapons. Iran's nuclear program is spread across multiple locations, only some of which are underground. However, such a large-scale strike could have serious consequences, including accelerating Iran's attempts to develop a nuclear weapon. The US has already stated that it would not support such an action by Israel.

Attack on Iran's oil infrastructure

Israel could also strike Iran's oil industry, which would severely affect the country's economy. However, such an attack could trigger retaliatory strikes by Iran against oil facilities in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, sending fuel prices higher. This would create additional tension in the context of the upcoming US presidential election on November 5.

Economic and cyber options

A military response is considered the most likely, but Israel could also use economic or cyber measures. US President Joe Biden has already said he may impose new sanctions on Iran. Israel could use its cyber warfare capabilities similar to those of the notorious 8200 unit that was involved in the pager operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
