Australia today announced a deal of worth 4.3 billion euros to arm its naval forces with modern American medium- and long-range missiles, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
The deal was hailed as a major step by Canberra, which in April unveiled its first national defense strategy focused on the Pacific in response to China's alleged “coercive tactics” in the region.
The purchase includes SM-6 cruise missiles, which can engage aircraft and cruise missiles, and SM-2 Block III C medium-range missiles with new targeting and homing capabilities.
„Australia is facing the most complex geostrategic environment since World War II,” Australian Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy said during a visit to Washington. The missiles will “ensure the security of Australians, deter adversaries and protect Australia's national interests in the missile era,” he said.
