Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called today for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council , at which to condemn yesterday's Israeli strikes against Iran, reported France Press.
In a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council, Aragchi insisted on an "urgent meeting of the Security Council to take a decisive position and condemn this aggression," the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, BTA specifies.
In the early hours of yesterday, Israel struck military sites in Iran in response to an Iranian missile attack on its territory on October 1 and attacks by Tehran-backed Islamist movements such as the Palestinian "Hamas" in the Gaza Strip and "Hezbollah" in Lebanon.
The Israeli army targeted missile production facilities, surface-to-air missile systems and air defense systems, AFP recalls.
In his letter, Aragchi stated that "most of the missiles fired were intercepted by Iran's air defense systems", but noted that the attack had "damaged targets” and caused the death of four soldiers.
The Israeli attack is a clear violation of Iran's sovereignty and it reserves the right to respond to this criminal aggression, he added.
The UN Security Council is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss Israel's attack on Iran, Reuters reported, citing diplomats.
