The United States would allow an exchange of nuclear strikes only on the condition that it retains some of its arsenal to further deter potential adversaries, said Rear Admiral Thomas Buchanan, spokesman for the US Department of Defense's Strategic Command.
„We certainly wouldn't want to trade blows like that. I think everyone will agree that if this does happen, it should be done under the most acceptable conditions for the country, he said at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, commenting on the possible use of nuclear weapons.
The spokesman for the strategic command emphasized that the United States would not want to find itself in an environment that would lead to such a situation.
According to Buchanan, he considers the most acceptable conditions in which the US “continues to lead the world”, which means maintaining a stockpile of strategic weapons.
„We must have spare capacity. You're not going to use up all your resources to win, are you?" - concluded Buchanan.
