German far-right leader Alice Weidel today sharply criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz for the management of his government, which took office in May, DPA reported, BTA reports.
“For bitterly disappointed citizens, you are already the Chancellor of Lies, Mr. Merz, whose broken election promises could fill entire catalogs,“ said Weidel, co-chair of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
In a speech during the general debates in the Bundestag (lower house of parliament), Weidel condemned the government's decision to reduce electricity tariffs only for large industrial companies, the agricultural and forestry sectors, without covering the entire population.
This measure was agreed in the coalition agreement between Merz's conservative bloc (CDU/CSU) and the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), but was not included in the draft budget for 2025.
“Your word is worth nothing, even when it is written in black and white in your meager coalition agreement“, said Weidel, describing Merz as a “paper chancellor“, subject to the Social Democrats.
She also sharply criticized the cabinet's migration policy, calling Interior Minister Alexander Dobrin't's measures for increased border controls “a distraction”. She also accused the government of a “debt orgy” to finance the new policies and criticized support for Ukraine.
During the debate Bundestag President Julia Klöckner urged MPs to avoid personal attacks and accusations of lying.
