Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with the newly elected President of the European Council Antoniou Košta in Kyiv . Zelensky praised Košta's decision to visit Ukraine on his very first day of work, which, according to him, demonstrates the importance of relations between the European Union and Ukraine.
„I am pleased to welcome today in Ukraine - on the very first working day of the new leadership of the European institutions - the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa,“ said Zelensky in a post on the "Telegram" social network.
Ukraine and NATO
During a press conference in Kiev, Zelensky expressed confidence that Ukraine deserves to be invited to NATO membership, but admitted that the alliance's defense umbrella will not be able to cover the occupied territories where the war continues.
„Any invitation to join the Alliance must apply to the entire territory of Ukraine,” he emphasized, while adding that the US still has time to “convince the skeptics” in Europe about the need for this step.
Antonio Kosta's visit to Kyiv and the discussions surrounding Ukraine's membership in NATO underline the commitment of the European institutions to the country in this critical period.
Zelensky clearly stated that Ukraine relies on the diplomatic and military support of the international community to continue its struggle for sovereignty and security.
