US President-elect Donald Trump may decline to nominate former officer and Fox News journalist Pete Hegseth to head the Pentagon and instead nominate Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, writes < /span>The Wall Street Journal, citing its own sources.
DeSantis was on a list of defense secretary candidates previously presented to Trump by his transition team, but the Republican chose Hegseth. With the US Senate likely to disapprove that nomination, including because of past sexual harassment allegations leveled against Hegseth, Trump has begun searching for a replacement. The next 48 hours are likely to be decisive for Hegseth, according to the publication's sources.
DeSantis has already been notified of a possible nomination to head the Pentagon.
He was a rival of Trump in the battle for the nomination of the President of the United States of the Republican Party. At the end of January, he announced his withdrawal from the race and supported his competitor.
Earlier, NBC reported that at least six Republican senators are "sceptical" to the nomination of Hegseth as Minister of Defence. In the event that all Democratic senators do not support Hegsett, the slight numerical advantage of the Republicans in the upper house of Congress could still allow him to win, but only if no more than three Republicans vote against him, the broadcaster indicated.
